Вариант 2

1. Чтение

Установите соответствие между заголовками А-Н и текстами 1—7. Занесите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую букву только один раз. В задании один заголовок лишний.

  1. UNUSUAL RELATIONSHIPS
  2. SIMILAR CHARACTERISTICS
  3. DIFFICULT PERIODS
  4. TWO TYPES
  5. IMPORTANT MOMENTS
  6. MISTAKEN BELIEFS
  7. MANY RESPONSIBILITIES
  8. HOME ALONE

1. In Britain, most families are ‘nuclear families’. This means that the family consists of the parents and children. Of course, there are uncles and aunts and grandparents too, but they do not have much to do with raising the children and often live a long way away. In many other countries, the extended family’ is more common. With the extended family, uncles, aunts and grandparents live much closer to the parents and children — sometimes even in the same building — and everyone in the family has a much closer relationship.

2. Most teenagers say at some point: ‘When I’m a parent, I’m going to give my children much more freedom than I have now.’ When they do actually become parents however, they soon realise that giving a child or teenager lots of freedom is not always the best thing to do. Many parents end up hearing their children saying to them exactly the same things they said to their parents when they were young.

3. What does bringing up a child involve? Giving a child love and making a child feel safe in their environment are extremely important. So is providing food and warmth. Parents also have a duty to teach their children the difference between right and wrong, and to make sure their children get a good education. Some parents believe that their role is also to teach children about the importance of things such as family, religion and society.

4. The English phrases ‘a chip off the old block’ and like father, like son’ (or ‘like mother, like daughter’) are used to show the similarities between a parent and their child. These might be similarities in terms of appearance, behaviour or interests. For example, if a dad loves watching cricket and his son Eric becomes interested in cricket too, you might say, ‘Eric’s a chip off the old block, isn’t he?’

5. ‘Latchkey kids’ are a major problem in many countries, including Britain and the USA. These are children whose parents are still at work when they come home from school, so there is no one at home to look after them. Their parents aren’t there to help them with their homework, and some of them spend hours on their own before their parents return.

6. The idea of’quality time’ is based on an understanding that the amount of time a parent spends with their child is not the only important thing. What is also important is what they do together during that time. Ten minutes of discussing problems that a teenager is facing may be much more valuable than two hours of watching a movie together in silence.

7. Families work well when things are going well, but the real test of a family comes at times of stress. Perhaps Mum has been working too hard, or perhaps young Amy is taking exams at school. These are times when all families can find themselves fighting instead of helping each other. When a family is going through a crisis like this, it can often help to talk to someone outside the family. It could either be an expert, such as a family counsellor, or a trusted family friend.

1.Bears all over the world

3. Box jellyfish

4. Dangerous hippos

6. Fast and dangerous sharks

A. In cartoons, these animals are usually slow, happy and funny. But real animals are very aggressive, and are certainly more dangerous than lions and tiger. They are very heavy – some are about 3, 000 kilograms. But they can run very fast and swim well, and they don’t like people. They kill more people in Africa than any other animal.

B. When people think of dangerous animals in the sea, they usually think of sharks. But sharks hardly ever kill people. The most dangerous sea animal isn’t very big. It’s a very small sea animal. The body of this sea animal is about 20 centimeters long. But it has got about 60 tentacles – and they are about three metres long . One of these tentacles can kill a human very quickly. It swims in the seas around Australia from October to April. When they are there, nobody goes swimming.

C. The animal with the most dangerous bite isn’t a snake or a lion. It’s an insect and you can find it all over the world. They give malaria to over 300 million people every year, and about three million people die. Forty per cent of the world’s population are always in danger of malaria from these insects. It is the world’s most dangerous animal – and it is also one of the smallest.

D. It is one of the most dangerous animals in the world. These animals kill hundreds of people in Africa and Asia every year. When they are babies, they are only about 20 centimetres long but they grow very fast. The biggest of them are over six metres long and are very heavy – about 1, 000 kilograms. They can live for 70–80 years. They live near rivers. They are very aggressive and dangerous. Their legs are very short but they can run quickly and swim very fast too.

E. They are mammals. Although only eight species of them are extant, they are widespread, appearing in a wide variety of habitats throughout the world. They are found on the continents of North America, South America, Europe and Asia. Common characteristics of modern animals include large bodies with stocky legs, long snouts, shaggy hair, paws with five claws, and short tails. They have been hunted since prehistoric times for their meat and fur. To this day, they play a prominent role in the arts, mythology and other cultural aspects of various human societies.

Gentle Giants of the Sea.

Blue whales are the biggest animals in the history of the earth – bigger than the largest dinosaurs. An adult blue whale can be 30 metres long and weigh 180,000 kilos. Its tongue is the same size as an elephant, and its heart is the same size as a small car.

When a blue whale is born, it is already very big. In fact, it is the same size and weight as an adult hippo. Like all mammals, the baby blue whale drinks its mother’s milk – about 400 litres every day. It lives on milk for about six months, and in this time, its size and weight doubles.

Blue whales are enormous, but they only eat tiny sea animals called «krill». An adult blue whale eats more than 1,000 kilos of krill every day. Krill live deep in the water, so blue whales dive when they are looking for food. Whales cannot breathe underwater, but they can swim underwater for a long time. A whale can hold its breath for an hour.

The blue whale is not only the biggest animal in the world, it is also the loudest. The sound of the aeroplane when it takes off is about 110 decibels. Some rock concerts are even louder: about 115 decibels. A blue whale can make a sound that is 150 decibels. The sound lasts for about 30 seconds. The sound of the blue whale is one of the strangest sounds in the ocean, and you can hear it hundreds of kilometres away.

There are probably about 10,000 blue whales in the world today. That is only 1 % of the number there were at the beginning of the 20th century. The reason for the disappearance of 99 % of blue whales is hunting. The hunting of blue whales is now against the law, but these beautiful animals are still in danger because of pollution and fishing nets.
